One Day Workshops¶
One-day workshop are short activity ranging from 2h to 8h hours. They generally focus in one type of making activities and work on various skills, both technical and soft ones. It is the smallest unit of activity in shemakes. Most of the activities are described as workshops (see folder "workshops" for more details)
In shemakes phase 1 and 2, labs have organized short sessions in many occasions with slightly little change in term of organization and planning. They have been cooperating with various entities such as museums, schools, associations. Let's learn from some examples of those cooperation:
Fab Lab Leon¶
e-monster workshop
The objective of this activity is to involve the young people in the entire textile fabrication process, from the conception of the idea to the execution of the textile project. This activity can be carried out in different groups of kids and teens by age (8-11 year-olds and 12-14 year-olds) and, if possible, some of the older participants can be invited to participate in the younger ones's activity to simulate the concept of “ambassadors” and transfer knowledge of the activity from one group to another.
The activity consist in the realization of an interactive textile object adapted to the tastes and interests of the participants in which an electronic circuit is introduced.
A detailed description of the e-monster workshop and tips to facilitate the activity can be found in the WORKSHOPS section
This activity can be conducted in different scenarios and places like fablabs, museums and schools and some agreements should be done in advance between the different parts to provide dissemination to the public and safety to the participants.
IAAC - Fab Lab Barcelona¶
Biomaterials workshop
The objective of this activity is to introduce basic concepts of digital fabrication and circular economy through STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics), active and experiential learning with a socio-emotional approach. This activity can be carried out with groups of 20 children and their teachers.
The activity consists in the realization of some adapted recipes of biomaterials with the introduction of a fairy tale about Remix the planet, and more illustrated feedback sessions.
A detailed description of the biomaterial workshop and tips to facilitate the activity can be found in the Remix the School Project
This activity can be conducted in different scenarios and places like museums and schools and some agreements should be done in advance between the different parts to provide dissemination to the public and safety to the participants.
Vivalab¶
e-slippers workshop
The objective of this activity is to introduce digital fabrication concepts to young people through a e-textile project. This activity can be carried out with groups of 8 participants, aged from 9 to 17 that can be accompanied by their families.
The activity consists in the creation of customised interactive slippers by cutting them on the laser cutter, decorate them with an e- textile circuit and then sew them.
A detailed description of the e-slippers workshop and tips to facilitate the activity can be found in the WORKSHOPS section
This activity can be conducted in different places than FabLabs if kits with different sizes are provided in advance.
Decode¶
digitizing looms workshop
The objective of this activity is to introduce the European day of wool and to explain the wool cycle by showing all the steps involved in the process. This activity can be carried out with groups of 12 participants, aged from 8 to 18 that can be accompanied by their families
The activity consists in the creation of woolen projects created with small looms that have been fabricated digitally, and using natural wool for explaning the wool cycle process.
A detailed description of the digitizing looms workshop and tips to facilitate the activity can be found in the WORKSHOPS section
This activity can be conducted in different scenarios and places like fablabs, museums, mountains, rural areas if kits with different sizes are provided in advance.
Vivistop¶

The objective of this activity is to introduce young girls in the field of e-textiles and encourage them to play with the electronics and modular design, to learn how to make the objects from 2D to 3D. This activity can be carried out with groups of 13 secondary school students.
The activity is an adaptation of the e-monster that consists in the creation of a doll with an incorporated circuit. The particpants can use the scissors and textile markers instead of the laser cutter for cutting the parts of the doll, for faster customization and prototyping.
To facilitate the explanation of the materials provided, this lab made a one-pager that was delivered to the participant with the kit of materials.
This activity can be conducted in schools using scissors and textile markers instead of the laser cutter.
Le Textile Lyon¶
e-dancing shoes with school students
The objective of this activity is to introduce participants to electronics as part of the interaction between objects and exterior, and generate an added value to textile projects. This activity can be carried out with groups of 7-o secondary school students and their teachers
The activity consists in two phases:
- 1 Draw and customize the shoe in order to prepare the design for the laser cut.
- 2 Build the circuit, plug the Playtronica and experiment the interactive shoe.
A detailed description of the e-dancing shoes workshop and tips to facilitate the activity can be found in the WORKSHOPS section
This activity can be conducted in different places than FabLabs if kits with different sizes are provided in advance.
